Background

In turn the Germans needed the time and troops to prepare the Ardennes Offensive in due silence and let only remains of Infantry and Volksgrenadier Divisions (people grenadier divisions) go in position in front of the first and second Siegfried Line.

Countless skirmishes and the Battle of the All Souls' Day demanded a terrible toll of lives of the U.S. divisions. 55,000 casualties on U.S. side were the price for an offensive which would never have been allowed to take place. The German defenders at the age between 16 and 60 defended their native country and left behind18,000 casualties as well as a lunar landscape where death happened even in later years.

Ernest Hemingway was eyewitness of the battle and of the nervous breakdown of his friend, the Regiment Commander Colonel Charles T. Lahm. In his book "Over the River and into the trees" the author changed his glorifying attitude to the war thoroughly.
