Background

The 9. Armoured Division of General John Millikin, the Commander of the III. Corps, is sent to the Rhine on March 7. The task: Securing of the city of Remagen. Second lieutenantKarl Timmermann of German descent succeeds in taking the bridge in the afternoon by storm since the blowing-up deflagrates because of an inferior explosive.

Despite desperate efforts on behalf of the German Army Group B under Model it is impossible to make the bridge to the collapse. The taking of the bridge appears like a miracle to the Americans as nobody in the Allied staff has calculated with that. Officially, the bridge is regarded as destroyed! Although the bridge collapses without a direct enemy influence on March 17, the American Army manages to get sufficient forces on to the east bank of the Rhine between March 8 up to 17 to hold the bridgehead durably against all attacks. Four German officers, among them one who had nothing to do with the bridge at all, are summoned to a court martial and are sentenced to death.
