Historical background

The landing of the Allies on June 6th, 1944 marked the beginning of the end of the Nazi Rule in Europe. The German supreme command expected the invasion at the Pas de Calais, the narrowest place of the channel. But the Allies had decided differently.

The second front should come in the Normandy. It was further from there up to the Ruhr district than of the English Channel but the Normandy offered the better landing beaches and room for deploying. British and American forces landed in the fire support of seven battleships, 24 cruisers, 123 destroyers and frigates, as well as their absolute air supremacy.

Despite enormous losses in the U.S. sector "Omaha" the operation "Overlord" turned out well. Within the next weeks a bitter battle raged in which the Germans had realistically never a chance to win the unequal fight. The material superiority was to crushing too big the air supremacy and resulting from this too low the reinforcements of weapons, ammunition and troops.
